Project Vanilla-Builds Dreams with Compassion
Igniting Hope for Mountain Education
Building Dreams for Children: “Project Vanilla”
“Project Vanilla” marked a significant milestone with the launch of its first public welfare project to bring hope and transformation to the remote mountainous regions straddling the borders of Guizhou and Guangxi.
Datan Primary School is situated in a remote mountainous region inhabited by ethnic minorities. The community predominantly consists of left-behind children and elderly individuals, as parents often migrate elsewhere for work. In this environment, children rely on the elder’s wisdom as their primary source of knowledge. They acquire fundamental academic knowledge at school and bridge knowledge gaps with fragmented information received through mobile phones.
Initially, the hygiene conditions at Datan Primary School were concerning
Upon entering Datan Primary School, visitors are confronted with a glaring absence of clean and sanitary dining areas and social spaces conducive to learning etiquette. For instance, the poorly maintained kitchen fails to ensure the provision of clean meals, while the substandard bathroom conditions pose both safety and hygiene risks. The combination of rudimentary facilities and substandard hygiene standards contributes to high teacher turnover rates. In addition, the lack of a reliable drinking water supply on campus necessitates daily transportation of water from one mountain to another by teachers and students. Consequently, only a few of the teachers who volunteer to support teaching would stay long-term amidst the challenges related to food, clothing, housing, and transportation.
In response to the school’s current challenges,“Project Vanilla” is determined to venture into the mountain regions and bring hope to the left-behind children. It has introduced several philanthropic organizations and soft educational systems to initiate a transformation at Datan Primary School.

Opening a Door to New Opportunities
One of the greatest drawbacks of living in the mountains for an extended period is the lack of access to information. This limitation severely constrains the development of the worldview, thoughts, and cognition of children. Moreover, the lack of parental companionship further diminishes their interest in learning, affecting both their physical and mental well-being. However, through the transformation brought by this project, the cognitive and learning conditions of the children significantly improved.
The original sports room featured outdated facilities and inadequate lighting. It had accumulated dust over time due to lack of cleaning, eventually becoming an abandoned space cluttered with miscellaneous items. However, following meticulous design and renovation efforts, the once-abandoned sports room has undergone a remarkable transformation. It has been repurposed and given new life as a reading room, providing students with a welcoming environment where they can immerse themselves in the world of books.

Although nestled in the depths of the mountains, the school benefits from ample natural sunlight during the day. Designers leverage the natural sunlight and incorporate abundant indoor lighting throughout the interior, illuminating the spacious wooden staircases where children can immerse themselves in the pursuit of knowledge. Despite the limited space, every available space is optimized with integrated floors and bookshelves brimming with books. What’s even more ingenious is that whether students are leisurely browsing for books in the reading room or engrossed in reading on the floor, they can simultaneously enjoy optimal reading conditions.
In selecting materials, the design team carefully evaluates the local climate, geographical setting, and on-site conditions of the school. They prioritize sustainable options, such as straw and bamboo waste, for the floating floor of the reading room. This approach ensures that the materials are well-suited to the specific environmental context while also fulfilling the broader social responsibility of promoting sustainable development.
The renovated reading room serves as a bridge for students from remote areas to connect with the broader world. Bathed in sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, they eagerly delve into new realms of knowledge on the refreshing wooden floor. Books accompany them consistently, nurturing an ongoing journey of their personal development while cultivating innovative cognitive insights.
